2000s: Can the secrets of an island reveal the secrets deep inside yourself?
Geologist Ann Salter seeks sanctuary on the exotic island of Lanzarote ready for some rest and relaxation. When she’s there, she meets the author Richard Parry and indigenous potter Domingo and the three of them start to explore the island together.
Ann’s encounters with the island’s hidden treasures becomes a journey deep inside herself as she struggles to understand who she was, who she is, and who she wants to be.
Lanzarote as you have never seen it before. An island of anger, volcanic, stark rugged landscape.
Her marriage is like the volcanoes she studies:.“Within weeks their interactions were tectonic, always grinding and crashing into each other, until their relationship had become a grotesque deformation.”
On the island: “Several calderas pimpled the land to the south-west. The lava plain, to the south of her now, rose to meet its mother, La Corona, a monolith of black in the fading light.”
This is an island with a past and a history to preserve at the same time that some of the islanders are trying to keep the modern day tourists at bay. Industry and traditions should be maintained and protected at all costs and some take this to heart.
This is a love affair with the island – its landscape, geography and more. The history is striking – it having been the object of pirates, the Spanish, and of course the modern day tourists.
