2023: In a tiny bookshop in Dubrovnik’s historic Old Town, a book club begins…
Newly arrived on the sun-drenched shores of Croatia, Claire Thomson’s life is about to change forever when she starts working at a local bookshop. With her cousin Vedran, employee Luna and Karmela, a professor, they form an unlikely book club.
But when their first book club pick – an engrossing cosy crime – inspires them to embark upon an investigation that is close to the group’s heart, they quickly learn the value of keeping their new-found friends close as lives and stories begin to entwine…
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Apart from the book shop, the vast majority of my locations are real, so here are some you can visit by taking an easy stroll in and around the old town.
The orthodox church (Church of the Holy Annunciation)
The plaza in front of the church is an important gathering place for Dubrovnik’s stray cats. It’s just down the road from the book shop and Claire watches them play during her first lunch hour.
The Sponza palace
Karmela’s favourite building, because it survived the great earthquake of 1667 when most of the city did not. It also houses the archives, so it’s where she spends most of her time.
Troubadour jazz café
For years this was the closest thing Dubrovnik had to a gay bar, and it features heavily in the book. It prides itself on being welcoming to everyone and well worth a visit for a coffee, a drink, or a meal.
Gradac park
Not often found by tourists, it’s not far outside the old town, beyond Lovrijenac fortress. It’s where Luna’s flatmate, Ezra, waits to pass on some important information to Claire.
Revelin square
A small area just outside the old town’s Ploce gate, with views back over the harbour. Vedran and Claire go there to talk after a particularly difficult evening.
