2000s: A detective, seriously ill in a Stockholm hospital, refuses to give up a case
Lars Martin Johansson, retired Chief of the National Crime Police and Swedish Security Service, has just suffered a stroke. His life of excess is finally catching up with him -his love of too much good food and fine wine not to mention the high levels of stress he’s endured. His blood pressure is so high his heart could fail at any moment.
In the hospital, a chance encounter with a neurologist provides an important piece of information about a 25-year-old murder investigation and alerts Lars Martin Johansson’s radar. Despite the fact, it could take him to his death bed, he aims to see this case through even if the period for prosecution expired just weeks earlier. It’s going to take more than that to stop him. It could be his last case however…
Gunther’s – the famous hot dog stand mentioned with such love and admiration in the first chapter is a very real and very tasty place in Stockholm. There are many of these kiosks but this has to be one of the best for the taste and range of sauces available.
The Karolinska hospital where Lars is taken is known for being the place for medical breakthroughs and expert care. It’s the second largest hospital system in Sweden, after Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg.
Just north of Stockholm, Lake Mälaren is where the poor girl is found murdered. There is mention of a castle – Skokloster castle as someone is renting a cottage near here and walking his dog when the body is found
Sigtuna is a town north of Stockholm known for the stone ruins of St. Olaf’s, St. Lawrence’s and St. Peter’s medieval churches. Stora Gatan, said to be Sweden’s oldest main street, dates back to the time of 10th-century King Erik the Victorious. IT’s a little more modern today of course and shops and offices are housed in old looking yellow buildings so you can see and feel the history as you wander around the place!
