Bruno Courrèges is a police officer in the rather stunning region of Dordogne in France. He’s just been invited to the 90th birthday party of a powerful local patriarch – a war hero if you will but it’s not the party he expects. For what he finds is a family full of secrets and hidden agendas. The party soon turns to murder and there are some very suspicious circumstances at play.
Bruno thinks something is wrong and when the man is cremated rather quickly, he becomes convinced of it. So, the investigation starts, but no one was expecting a trail which would lead into a potential scandal involving France and the Cold War.

Death in the Dordogne? As well as the usual mystery and intrigue in a police case with Bruno Chief of police, the setting of Dordogne where the air is plein and the wine a flowing, might not seem to have a link with war in Russia.
Whilst St Denis is fictional, the author says that it is based on many a town in and around the Dordorgne area. The towns of Sarlat, Bergeraac and Belves are particular inspirations. However smaller towns such as St Cyprien, Sainte Alvere, Tremolat and Le Buisson. The Mairie the war memorial come from one town and Bruno’s world is one where the cafes, the war memorial and the local market make up the very essence of small town France,Bruno’s world is also made up of small town politics mixed with large scale indiscretions.
The river that runs through St Denis is the Vezere,where panning for gold is a typical tourist pastime. Just down the road in St Emilion and Pomerol are the wine centres where Bruno goes to buy fine wine.
