2020: Science fiction in Mexico – we’d never read anything like this before!
It’s 2020 and the Mexican President has provoked the United States by calling for the removal of US troops from Colombia and demanding higher prices for Mexico’s oil.
As Mexico’s satellite communications system is controlled in Miami, when they are switched off, Mexico is cut off from the world and the only way people can communicate is via letter.
But letters are slow and there are questions which need fast answers such as who in this highly unstable country will be the next President, ie the next to ascend the Eagle’s Throne?
This is a roller coast ride thorough Mexican politics, written in a series of letters from all kinds of factions within Mexico – government, ordinary people discussing who will be the next president in this fictional Mexico.
The country is on its knees –
Mexico is stained by blood-soaked rivers, ripped open with mass graves, strewn with unburied corpses
Set in 2020, this is of course futuristic but nevertheless often feels real and always feels relevant. The Mexican government has defied “el Norte” , the USA by rising its prices of the oil and so in return all communication has been turned off. What would happen in this futuristic world with all communications dead and the old fashioned letter coming back into play. How would people cope and how would the problems raised by sorted by snail mail?
Mexico’s government is thrown into disarray and in this apocalyptic setting they are confused as to what to do and how to do it.
The Eagle’s throne is nothing more and nothing less than a seat on the rollercoaster that we call the Republic of Mexico
This is a journey into the bowels of Mexican politics…
