1967: On a stifling summer night, sixteen-year-old Jeff Gentle and his older sister meet the charismatic Kip Armstrong, a homeless drifter who seems to hold answers to the world’s problems. With their parents dead and their guardians gone, the siblings offer Kip refuge in their grand Georgian home which sits in the shadow of the newly built Valley Park Estate in Newcastle.
Soon, other lost souls join them, and a small commune is born. They christen their sanctuary “The Flower House”, but beneath the façade of peace and harmony, Kip’s true nature begins to emerge, and things take a sinister turn.
2023: Jeff has bequeathed the Flower House to his daughter Vivien, a property developer who is set to rebuild the nearby Valley Park estate. Vivien is thrilled to be reunited with her father in the childhood home she adores.
But within its walls lie dark secrets, and when Vivien becomes entangled in the life of a reclusive old woman who would rather die than leave her decaying home on Valley Park, the past begins to unravel, and Vivien uncovers a disturbing connection between Valley Park and the home she thought she knew.
Newcastle
Author mini guide:
I would suggest anyone visit the fantastic city of Newcastle upon Tyne! The Ouseburn Valley is a lovely little oasis in the east end, full of artists’ studios, cute cafes and lovely bars, a community farm, and a very beautiful viaduct. Grey’s Monument sits at the top of Grey Street in the city centre, and is the gateway to Grainger Town, one of the dazzling jewels in Newcastle’s crown, with classical architecture designed in the 1830s by the internationally renowned Richard Grainger. A walk down Grey Street towards the River Tyne is not to be missed. You’ll receive our famous Geordie welcome.
