1850, 2025: Travel back in time to solve a crime!
Ali Dawson and her cold case team investigate crimes so old, they’re frozen – or so their inside joke goes. Most people don’t know that they travel back in time to complete their research.
The latest assignment sees Ali venture back farther than they have dared before: to 1850s London in order to clear the name of Cain Templeton, the eccentric great-grandfather of MP Isaac Templeton. Rumour has it that Cain was part of a sinister group called The Collectors; to become a member, you had to kill a woman…
Fearing for her safety in the middle of a freezing Victorian winter, Ali finds herself stuck in time, unable to make her way back to her life, her beloved colleagues, and her son, Finn, who suddenly finds himself in legal trouble in the present day.
Could the two cases be connected?
London
What a fascinating mix of London in two separate timelines! In the 1850s, we see one version of the city with all the cobbled streets, the sights and smells, the poverty and the grim workhouses. In the present day, the city is vibrant and busy but Oxford Street is even busier! Fewer horses and carts however.
A great way to see the city in two timelines side by side and like photographs, they overlap magically such as when someone materialises in a side street and then walks into Oxford Street….
Well this is just a delight from start to finish!
There’s something very magical about time – travelling cops who solve cold cases. Like something out of a fantasy novel or even one for children perhaps? Well not here – that’s the brilliance of Elly Griffiths. You really believe in what this book shows you – that there really are police who go back in time to solve crimes. A clever premise that has been intrinsically evoked and created on the page to stunning effect. I really believe what I have just read. Elly you are a genius. Just very clever and it works on so many levels.
