2000s and years earlier: A missing child, a murder, a community torn apart
When a four-year-old girl disappears in the woods outside Fjällbacka, people are horror-struck. Thirty years ago, a child went missing from the same spot, and was later discovered, murdered.
Back then, two teenage girls were found guilty of the killing. Could one of them be the culprit this time? Detective Patrik Hedström starts investigating, with his wife, bestselling crime writer Erica Falck, by his side.
But as Patrik and Erica dig deeper, it seems that everyone in the tight-knit community is hiding something. And soon, the residents must confront the fact that there could be a murderer in their midst…
Fjällbacka is the famous setting for all of the Camilla Lackberg series. However, here it takes on an ominous tone with the historic murder of a young girl in a farm’s lake. Then many years later, another young girl goes missing from the same farm and found in the same lake. (Both fictional for obvious reasons)
The farm has been bought by a new family but the stain of the murder, is even more pronounced in a small town such as Fjällbacka. Two teenage girls confessed and then retracted their confession. One of them has married and lives in the area. The other, a famous actress, has now returned to the area. The return of a child murderer to a small town creates a tinder box of emotions.
Not far from the town is the small town of Tamushede where the police station for the area is in the book. This is where the refugee centre is located which adds tension and suspicion to an already fraught situation.
The setting for the historical part of the story delving into the past, when women were considered to be witches and tried for their alleged crimes.
