1940,1946: Under occupation, a French girl falls in love with a German soldier
1940. When a French family is forced to house a German soldier in their spare room, young Noemie finds herself drawn to the enemy living under the family roof. A forbidden romance unfolds with life-changing consequences.
1946. In the aftermath of the war, a little girl is found sitting on a bench with no memory of who she is – not even her own name. Justin, a young gendarme, takes her under his wing. He is desperate to unravel the mystery surrounding her sudden appearance.
The novel is set around the region of Bordeaux and the surrounding villages. Bordeaux we are told is set to German time whilst the villages close by are still on French time. This creates divisions and confusion and adds to the fogginess and fear of war.
As in the novel Suite Francaise, a German soldier comes to live in the house of the French characters. Imagine having someone invade your home in this way and stay. Imagine it’s your worst enemy from the country invading your own, changing everything you know and often killing those around you. Imagine then falling in love with this man. What a situation to explore.
