At the time of her death, the press wrote many things about Ingrid Olssen:
She was a brilliant artist. She was a terrible mother to her girls, Mattie and Nora. And that her legacy would live on forever.
Even so, it’s unlikely the world will ever see another Ingrid Olssen exhibition – her last request to her daughters was to throw her ashes in the canyon and her paintings in the sea.
But as Mattie and Nora reluctantly embark on an all-or-nothing trip to fulfil her wishes, they start to unpick the painful scars of their past.
And soon they begin to realise that the ties that bound them, might also break them…
From Arizona to California
The girls time in America has a very unique purpose. They fly into Arizona and then precede to make their way to San Francisco. The girls in question have been asked to drop the paintings of one of their friends off the Golden Gate bridge and sprinkle her ashes off the Grand Canyon. Two very distinct scenes here and we go on a road trip with little adventures along the way to the final destination as it were.
Sun, long roads and that Californian feeling permeate the whole book. When they drive from one state to another, there is a feeling of escapism but also one of coming home. This is a trip you would not want to do in real life of course as it’s for a very sad reason. There is poignancy and sadness in the car with the characters.
London
The novel starts in London and there are some nice mentions of museums and art galleries. The road trip is clearly the focus of the novel and so London is not on the map.
