1958: There’s something not right about that lake….
1958. When It-girl Vivienne George flees on the eve of her wedding she seeks refuge in a scheduled lodge surrounded by the lush rainforest of tropical North Queensland. There, she is relieved to find that the small farming town couldn’t be further from the high society she’s left behind.
Now, Vivienne spends her days swimming in the beautiful Lake Evelyn where she befriends the larger-than-life Josie. But all is not as it seems in this quiet, close-knit community.
Vivienne soon learns that over a decade earlier, Celeste Starr, a beautiful actress, died tragically in the lake’s dark waters, spawning a curse that has plagued the girls of the town ever since.
Fascinated by Celeste’s tale, Josie decides to stage a play about her death, with Vivienne in the lead role, setting off a chain of disturbing events . .
Fictional Barrington, Queensland
The fictional village and lake where this novel is set is inspired by the real Atherton Tablelands – an area of astonishing natural beauty, fascinating history and close-knit enduring communities according to the author note at the back of the novel.
Since an early age, Averil has wanted to write about this part of the world where she used to travel to a lot as a child with her father. The Atherton Tablelands she writes was an important base of military operations during WW2.
What a great mystery! A woman flees her wedding and heads up to a remote lake to hide out. She meets a woman and the two become friends and swim in the lake. However the lake has secrets…..
Who knew Northern Queensland could be so tropical yet dark at the same time? Great atmospheric setting with lovely descriptive writing. The lodge and lake are creepy despite this being a novel where the sun always shines. Several women have drowned in that lake and one in particular was a famous actress. When the women decide to put on a play about this actress, well, it conjures up all kinds of darkness.
There’s something very chillingly good about a lake with a curse. I haven’t read anything like this in a while. A great premise for a novel and the lovely writing just made it for me.
