Beth Jago appears to have the idyllic life in a lovely little cottage on the River Valley in Cornwall. She’s happy here, works a trade and earns a living and lives a quiet and unassuming life.
However one day she receives a letter, threatening her and demanding that she leave her home. But worse is to come for a stranger then enters her home and in the ensuing struggle, he is hit over the head and loses his memory. This man is helpless and Beth ends up taking care of him, guilty and not knowing what else to do but Beth never forgets that he is a stranger and that her nightmare is probably not over yet.

The woodland here is described as shaded and steep, the river shaped like a slithering snake and the harshness of the slate canyon part of the majestic Cornish coastline.
