1930s: A herbalist arrives in a small Irish village….
Teenager Emily is spellbound by the exotic stranger who appears out of nowhere and sets up his stall in the market square. All the women appear mesmerized by the visitor who, they say, can perform miracles.
However, Emily soon discovers the miracle-worker’s dark side and her world turns upside down. She may be naive, but she has a fierce sense of right and wrong. Emily has a tough choice to make; either to let the herbalist pay for his sins against the women of the town? Or let him escape to cast his spell on another place?
The book is set in a fictional and vague place – a village somewhere in rural Ireland with quite a drive from Dublin. This adds to the overall mystery and atmosphere of the book and portrays a small community which is quite inward looking and self sufficient as many communities are. But when a mysterious man comes to town…
In such a quiet place , his appearance spices things up and provides hope where there is none. A small village/town isolated from big cities in 1930s Ireland is very rural indeed.
Here, the grape vine is the news service and the community centre rolled into one – where some of the town folk think the country folk are beneath them. snobbery, poisonous relationships and one way thinking lead the way
