2000s: Number 11, Dukes Square, looks just like the other houses on the Brighton seafront…but it’s not
At first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Number 11, Dukes Square, Brighton is just like any other house on the seafront. It’s a Regency terrace with elegant sash windows, a winding staircase, and post piled up in the hall for its tenants. It might be part of the city’s history, but it’s also a place of brand new beginnings.
Three women, strangers to each other at first, live there: Georgie has followed her childhood sweetheart to Brighton but she’s desperate for a career of her own
Charlotte’s in the city for a new start and an escape from her past. But Margot, the stylish old lady on the top floor, has other ideas.
Rosa has escaped London to move to Brighton and train as a sous chef. She works hard and keeps her head down but if she keeps it down for too long she may not see the opportunities which lie ahead..
As the three tenants find each other, the house becomes The House of New Beginnings….
House 11 on Brighton is the house of dreams. If you believe in astrology, it’s also a lucky house since number 11 – house 11 in astrology is the house of friends, hope, wishes, goals and ideals. It has an imposing black door and stairs leading up to it that you can imagine Victorian ladies sweeping up to it with their petticoats and long dresses. It sounds grand and imposing – very much of the regency style that is popular in this part of town. But it couldn’t be more homely if it tried.
The house brings people together and nestled on the Brighton seafront, it has a view of the city like no other. There is of course no Dukes Square and Princess Square but the rest of the seaside town is more than evoked with the pier and the Brighton pavilion making fleeting appearances. The seagulls and the chatter of tourists on the beach can be heard all around but it’s the events in this house, this house of the grand facade that hides a multitude of emotions and stories.

Lucy Diamond never fails to cheer me up. A house of New Beginnings sounds like a lovely thing – both in real life and in a novel and I must admit to looking at a map and hoping that 11, Dukes Square was going to be a real place as I was al ready to pack my bags and head down there. Sadly it’s a fictional street but the story transports you there anyway so that was good.
There’s not so much as a booktrail here but rather an emotional trail of three women with a range of issues who all happen to share one address. Three women who find out just what life can throw at you but what ever happens it’s how you deal with it that counts.
A good book to read in the new year to decide on some resolutions and some new beginnings of your own.
