2000s: How much does a housekeeper ever really know? How much does she control?
Anne Morgan works in a restaurant with her boss who she’s also sleeping with. When he leaves her for another woman, she needs both a new job and a new place to live. She finds out that her celebrity idol, Emma Helmsley, is in need of a housekeeper, which presents an opportunity too good to be true.
Emma is a bit of a Martha Stewart type of character who talks and advises on how to have a balanced and peaceful life, but behind her own net curtains, there leaves a lot to be desired. Does the glitz of celebrity really match up the photos on the internet and the public perception? And what does the housekeeper manage to find out on top of that. She may deal with the dirty laundry every day but what’s really in the pile that no one dare hang out in public?
How much of it belongs to the housekeeper herself?
The house in Richmond where it all takes place could be any one of the grand houses in the area. The grand houses with white facades, some of them fading and flaking on further inspection and where the net curtains or blinds twitch more than most.
Anne Morgan brings her past and her obsessions with her former boss into the house and her life becomes that of her employers. Her employers are not who they seem and the husband is writing a novel about cults and a power-hungry psychologist which frightens and surprises her at the same time. She appears to be part of his study, part of his interest so the house soon becomes a gilded cage that is not that gilded when it’s you that has to clean it. There are some places and situations where the dirt will always be there no matter how hard you scrub.
The house is grand, posh and glitzy from the outside but appearances can be deceptive.
