The village of Ardnakelty is fictional but it is also very remote and a bit strange so you wouldn’t want to go there even if there is said to be gold.
The village in the book is very remote and stifling hot. Not the place you would imagine there being gold. The crops are failing, the animals are dying and everyone is suffering in some way.
The heat can make some people do strange things.
