2000s: A young widow’s reclusive life in a charming beach town is interrupted by a surprise visitor
Lauren Adelman and her high school sweetheart, Rory Kincaid, are a golden couple. They marry just out of college as Rory, a star hockey player, earns a spot in the NHL. But then Rory shocks everyone-Lauren most of all-by enlisting in the U.S. Army. Tragedy strikes and Lauren is left devastated and alone.
She retreats to her family’s old beach house on the Jersey Shore. But this summer she’s forced to share the house with her overbearing mother and competitive sister. Worse, a stranger making a documentary about Rory tracks her down and persuades her to give him just an hour of her time.
One hour with filmmaker Matt Brio turns into a summer of revelations, surprises, and upheaval.
If you’re going to escape the city and head out to the country, then Absecon Island as described in this novel is the place to do it
“Absecon Island was a barrier island on the Jersey shore of the Atlantic Ocean”.
It’s remote and there’s more seagulls that people so this is what appeals most to Lauren as she heads there to recover. There’s no traffic, and in the winter we are told that the Jersey Shore felt deserted. She’ll be staying in a half-empty town but with its grey skies and the chill off the wind from the ocean but that’s just what the doctor ordered it would seem!
Her bedroom sounds typical of the houses and rooms that might be close to the beach:
“The bedroom was white and sea-foam green with a queen-size bed framed in antique cast iron.”
She often takes a run from Longport to Atlantic City and back again. Quite the distance!
