Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm.
Detective Inspector Joona Linna has to deal with a young boy who has witnessed the gruesome murder of his family. He’s in a bad way himself – both mentally and physically.
Linna’s running out of time. The killer’s on the run and, seemingly, there are no clues. Desperate for information, Linna enlists disgraced specialist Dr Erik Maria Bark, for help.
But the hypnosis has consequences far beyond those that Joona can ever expect. And a long chain of events starts to unfurl…..
You won’t want to visit this side of Stockholm but real sights and places can take you there on quite the horrific ride safely in a literary setting. The Karolinska hospital is a major and well respected hospital and research centre so it was quite something to read about it in a novel of this kind!
We do get the runaround in and around Stockholm’s many islands which is a great discovery to make yet it is the centre of Stockholm that takes on such a dark tone as the killing and the investigation colour everything in its wake.
The very idea that a man, a killer is butchering families is this way is chilling and grotesque. Stockholm is bathed in golden light most of the time due to the lovely yellowstone buildings and is a nice peaceful place so the very idea that someone like this is lurking in the city is horrendous and chilling. The idea that a hypnotist can get inside victims heads and try to track down clues into the case, find out what victims can remember if anything is a cold hard look into the human psyche. Hypnotism is a mysterious art for many but here it becomes intriguing and beguiling all at once, if not a little disturbing.
