2000s: There are a lot of secrets lurking beneath Oslo….
When a dead man is lifted from the freezing waters of Oslo Harbour just before Christmas, Detective Lena Stigersand’s stressful life suddenly becomes even more complicated. Not only is she dealing with a cancer scare, a stalker and an untrustworthy boyfriend, but it seems both a politician and Norway’s security services might be involved in the murder.
With her trusted colleagues, Gunnarstranda and Frølich, at her side, Lena digs deep into the case and finds that it not only goes to the heart of the Norwegian establishment, but it might be rather to close to her personal life for comfort.
This is a chilly and very unsettling side to the city. Tunnels underground, secret passage ways through the walls of the underground and an icy, unforgiving harbour.
When a body is found in the waters, yards from the city’s Town Hall, fear is heightened. The investigation into this death seems to lead to the secret services and the parliament itself. Turns out the maze of secrets may well link the two, but how?
Talking of mazes, the Oslo underground is full of them. All tunnels have spaces for workmen to hide from trains, but there are also escape routes and other avenues for walking free from the tunnel. There is a chase here at the start of the book and then the darkness sucks you into the plot even more.
Oslo is a rich city but it’s the source of that wealth -from its politicians and its oil links that prove to be more dangerous than first thought.
There are some nice touches to making the city come alive in a nice way though – Tanum Books on Karl Johans Gate gets a nice mention!
