Yorkshire and the Metland Eggs
Guillemots are sea birds that reside in crowded colonies on rocky cliff sides. When they breed, they produce one conical egg which incubates for around 30 days on the precarious cliffside… guillemots don’t make nests. The shape of the egg stops it rolling away.
The author explains that she heard a news report about the theft of 30 guillemot eggs which were stolen from the same bird. It pained her to think of this, a mother loosing so many children, that she wanted to write about it in a crime novel. This is a real mystery for once the Metland Eggs were gone, they were never seen again.
