Lady Winifred has had a troubled childhood. Her mother, father and brother were all imprisoned for treason due to their support for the Catholic king. When she falls in love with a handsome young Scottish nobleman, the marriage brings happiness. However, she is forced to rebel when her husband takes up the Jacobite cause and vows to restore the Catholic king to the throne. While Winifred wants to be loyal to her husband, she also wants to protect him from imprisonment – and worse, the scaffold!
Just how far will she go to save him?
Locations are largely focused in London and the Tower of London is the place everyone fears. That is the place, the tower where traitors are dealt with, and everyone knows what that means.
There is a jaunt to St Germain en Laye as the party visit royalty and relatives in France and fighting for the Jacobite cause of course, before heading home.
This is course a fictionalised account of the life of Winifred, Countess of Nithsdale (1672 – 1749).She was brought up in the turmoil of late 17th century politics, and spends much of her time in the exiled court of James II in France . Her Scottish husband was William Maxwell (the 5th Earl of Nithslade). The goal at that time was to ensure that exiled James II returned to the throne.
