What you need to know before your trail

When a headless corpse is lifted from the scrubland close to Liverpool Docks, DCI feels that it carries all the hallmarks of a gangland hit. What’s more he fears that it’s a warning to others – gangs as well as cops and snitches that this gang means business. When they identify the body, things become even more dangerous

At the same time, a girl, confused and dazed staggers into a dodgy bar owned by career criminal Shakespeare. He tries to find out whats wrong but can’t get a word out of her

One mile away, a girl staggers into a run-down bar, dazed and confused. The bar’s owner, a career criminal called Shakespeare, cannot get a word out of her.

McCartney realises that this one body will lead him into an investigation which will take him into the bowels of his city and into a world he will need  luck as well as skill to get out of alive.

Travel Guide

Scouse Noir?

Dive into the seedy side of Liverpool head first. From the desolate scrubland to the dank Liverpool docks, this is the city of the underworld and the dark dangerous underbelly you would not want to visit for real

Certainly not for the people you would meet in this novel. A port city will always attract the city’s waifs and strays and the criminal who try and import drugs and illegal goods.

“Liverpool is Drug Mountain”

Couple that with a DCI by the name of McCarthy and a dubious landlord named Shakespeare and the Liverpool wit is alive and well.

Liverpool docks

“Liverpool is one of the great capitals of criminality”

Liverpool as a port city  has a long history of industry and has been an important sea port throughout history. The people and the port are intertwined, and both are part of the city.

Liverpool here is a city in flux – one built on trade and industry and now a pungent backdrop for drugs and degradation. Imagine the life which teemed alongside the docks years ago and that which is there now?

The city’s landmarks featured in the novel are numerous although Sefton Park doesn’t look good and neither do the docks or the streets in and around Chinatown.
