2000s: Beware of the Lady in Red when you’re in Houghton le Spring
DI Lorraine Hunt and her team in Houghton le Spring are no strangers to serious cases but his latest case seems to be something they’ve never experienced before and it’s rather close to home.
There seems to be a killer amongst them and in this rough yet often close-knit community, on the Seahills estate, this is a worrying possibility. If you can’t trust one of your own, who can you trust?
Ther may not be that much time to find out. The people of Seahills have some very serious questions to ask themselves.
There is a lot of nice detail and Northern Wit in this novel. From the very question of why there is a statute of Neptune in the middle of Durham….
This book is set on the (fictional) Seahills Estate in Houghton-le-Spring near Sunderland in the North East of England and the community is a close knit one but one which is full of suspicion. One of their own is hiding a secret. You realise why this estate has to be real when you read Sheila’s novels.
The level of detail and tongue in cheek humour shines. Lorraine Hunt of Houghton le Spring CID wears a pink fluffy dressing down over her winceytte passion killer pink pajamas. Unwanted Xmas present from the previous year. A tough policewoman and her life at home which reveals her character and charm.
The language also is typically northern with the dialect -words like ‘nowt’ are peppered into the dialogue often with comedic affect. But this just goes to highlight the gritty realism alongside.
