Brighton is not the bright place it was in earlier books as this town is plagued by the second world war like so many others in Britain at the time.

Effrosyni says that she drew heavily from her experiences as a youngster to write this novel. She holidayed in her grandparents’ house in the seaside village of Moraitika, Corfu. The book is a work of fiction but it’s peppered with autobiographical elements.
