Madeleine is trapped every way she turns– by her family’s expectations, by her controlling husband, an unhappy marriage and a life she never wanted. She finds one means of escape however when she comes across a diary which details her grandmother Margie’s trip to Jazz Age Paris.
There she meets a woman she never knew: a dreamer who defied her strict family and spent a summer living on her own, and falling for a charismatic artist.
Madeleine decides to return to her hometown to stay with her disapproving mother. Family secrets and hidden pasts are about to help her decide and make her own future.
The city where the story starts and within the Stabler Museum of modern and renaissance art where Madeleine works. This is fictional but there are several art museums in and around the city to see the world of paintings and art as she does
This is the roaring 20s and the city of lights positively sprinkles with the sound of jazz and the sounds of a good time. Madeleine’s aunt has a very different life to that of the controlled one Madeleine is used to. Here life is free and easy and full of freedom.
