Eighteen-year-old Adrian Brown spends his days working at the local newspaper, and his evenings in his local pub. But under this ordinary surface lies a haunting story. Aged ten, Adrian was kidnapped by a shadowy figure known as the Lollipop Man, who had abducted three children before. Adrian was the only one to escape.
When another child goes missing, the media whips up a frenzy that the Lollipop Man has returned. Journalist Sheila Hargreaves, troubled with memories of her involvement in the reporting of the previous abductions, is determined to dig deeper, atone for what she did nearly a decade ago and bring a killer to justice.
Yorkshire
Oh there are some locations here! From Halifax, Leeds, Bradford and Hebden Bridge, some are mentioned in more detail than others but there is a definite Yorkshire flavour.
The novel evokes real life crimes such as the Moors Murders where many bodies were buried on Saddleworth Moor. This use of real and fictional and vague locations is particularly effective at creating a unique yet easily identifiable remote area.
This didn’t go the way I thought! A straight forward police procedural I thought but no! A case with history and one that involves a lot more red herrings and twists than first thought.
It was a nice surprise to be honest as I read it as I wanted a comfort read ( in crime I know what’s wrong with me?) but got this and it made me sit up and read more slowly.
I will definitely be reading more from Mr Sellers. Great characters got me really intrigued. Very clever to set it in Yorkshire where the Moors murders have stained the earth. All very atmospheric and nicely done.
