Travel Guide

Rajasthan

The Lotus Queen is the author’s imagining of one of the most famous legends in India. Although the novel is based on historical events, places and persons, it should be be very much considered a world of fiction.

“Mewar was the ancient kingdom of the Rajputs, stretching from Gujarat in the south to Ajmer in the north (most of the modern day Rajasthan). Its capital Chittor was one of India’s largest forts, situated hundred and twenty kilometres east of the modern city of Udaipur, at the northern end of the Aravali Mountain range. Built on a rocky plateaus about hundred and eighty metres  in heights from the flat plans below the fort was encircled by walls and seven gates (pols): Lakshman, Pol, Jodla Pol, Ganesh Pol, Hanuman Pol, Bhairon Pol and Padal Pil  (in descending order) to the west and Suraj Pol to the east.”
“In the fourteenth century, the rules of Mewar were referred to as as “Rawal” in honour of the legendary Kalbhoj (Bappa Rawal), the founder of the Mewar Dynasty. the titles ‘Rawal’ and ‘King’ are, therefore, used interchangeably throughout.”
