1770s: Continuing from The Loyalist’s Wife, this journey back to the time of the Revolutionary War In Canada and America
When the revolutionary war turns in favor of the Americans, John and
Lucy flee. They start again in a British outpost but then he has to go off on a secret mission for Colonel Butler leaving her behind once again. The camp is not an easy place to be, certainly not for a woman as there is barely any food and life is hard. Distrust also lives amongst those left behind and when there’s a rumour that John has switched sides and is now fighteing fot the Americans, KLucy is shunned. Only her friend Nellie sticks by her. Sergeant Crawford also stands by her in a fashion but he refuses to clear John’s Name.
War tests the boundaries of countries, men and of the human spirit.
The American Revolution and Colonial America,
This is the second novel to continue the story of Lucy and John – two loyalists who became involved with the Loyalists War. The setting and atmosphere not to mention the history is very significant and enhanced by the fact that it is based on Elaine Cougler’s ancestors.
The loyalist of the story shows the brutal and graphic nature of war whilstLucy reveals and endures the camps and the day to day struggle of living whilst the men go away to fight. The fear that they will not return looms large and their fear is compounded when the fighting and battle scenes draw you into the battle fields and what it must have been like to have been at the site of some of the bloodiest battles at that time.
Between these two sides, there’s the constant flow of people caught up in the war, those displaced and forced to flee. Those confused and those with dual loyalties.
The loyalists battled and fought as hard they can, but like many wars, this seems to have been a matter of luck in some cases. The setting doesn’t lend itself to luck nor the nature of the war, but those who survive are the luckiest of all.
