Early 20th C: The setting in Madeira is so vividly portrayed that it is almost a character in the book itself!

Julia is a widower whose husband has died whilst working for British Intelligence in Central Asia with Colin, a cousin.
One day she travels to Madeira to spend time with friends and her young son Philip but Colin’s young wife is also on the island. Before long, they get mixed up in a series of bizarre events and even stranger cases of sickness. Julia is frightened that these symptoms are very similar to those her husband showed prior to his death. There couldn’t be any link….could there?
The scenery here really is quite something and the feeling that you should immediately go visit the island well, that’s what we wanted to do. Definitely to see the Pico do Ruivo which is the highest point of the island with the kind of views that take your breath away. When Aglaia goes up this mountain when they go visiting near The Serra it’s described as somewhere which is ‘fresher than Funchal’ . Funchal is the largest city in Madeira and is where the boats dock so to get a feel for these two places and the idea of the mountain overlooking everything is a nice bird’s eye view of the surroundings.
