1920s: A man in a London theatre queue is killed in 1920s London
Outside a London theatre a throng of people wait expectantly for the last performance of a popular musical. But as the doors open at last, something spoils all thought of entertainment: a man in the queue is found murdered by the deadly thrust of a stiletto…
A theatre built in 1911, very similar to the Woffington theatre in the novel
The Strand was brilliant as day and crowded, the ebb of the late home-goers meeting the current of the early pleasure seekers and causing a flurrey that filled both footpath and roadway. Slowly he walked up the gaudy pavement towards Charing Cross, in and about of the changing light from the shop windows.
“Won’t it be awful to die under a bus in the Strand after dodging the boche for four years!”
It’s the theatre world of London which comes to life in this book but a few jaunts and chases to Nottingham and the highlands of Scotland are a nice distraction to the London based plot.
