2000s: Attraction is easy but falling in love can be hard
When Hannah meets Sonny, she’s irresistibly drawn to him: he’s sexy and confident, but only in town on holiday. That’s fine with Hannah – she doesn’t do long-term relationships. And luckily for her, neither does Sonny. But before they can even so much as kiss, Sonny receives some shocking news and commits to making serious life changes – ones that can’t and won’t include romance.
With even a short fling now off the cards, Hannah and Sonny settle for being friends. But as summer hots up and their chemistry shows no signs of cooling, they start to question their reasons for shutting each other out.
Are they both too broken to find love? And if they tear down the walls between them, will they still like what’s on the other side?
There’s something to be said about Paige Toon staying closer to home in this book. Grantchester and Cambridge are two places she knows very well and the only location research she had to do, was to go to the Orchard tea garden to sample the local cakes!
Grantchester is perhaps best known for the setting of books by James Runcie and of course TV detective series of the same name. This novel looks at the village as a cosy and lovely place to find romance! The church and teashops, not to mention cosy pubs get a nice mention. Oh to read this book beside a roaring fire with a cup of hot chocolate to hand!
Cambridge is not the university city here but one where homelessness is a real problem. This issue is carefully examined in the novel and it will open your eyes to what tourists and visitors often don’t see. The city is also rich in history and heritage and you really have to go!
