Lymstock should be a place to rest and recuperate. That’s what Joanna Burton hoped for when she and her brother, an airline pilot, move there in order for him to convalesce when he is shot down in action in WW2.
AT first village life is good and quiet, home is a nice small cottage and rural life is just what the doctor ordered. They rent the cottage from Miss EMily Barton and get to know her and the other villagers quite quickly.
But one day the Burtons receive a poisonous letter and it seems that they are not the only ones. Mrs Symmington – the wife of the local solicitor receives one and soon after she takes her own life. What terrified her so much about the letter that causes her to do this?
When the family maid is found dead, the whole affair becomes a lot darker and a lot more sinister…
Lymstock is a fictional village somewhere in the heart of England. Somewhere that you would hope to be able to relax and take time away from the stresses and strains of recovering from an accident. The Burtons – strangers to the area receive a letter detailing some shocking secrets they are supposed to share. How have this brother and sister ended up in Lymstock and who would know them and want to spread hate?
When Mr Symmington receives a letter, the mystery deepens. She is the wife of the local solicitor. She writes ‘ I cant go on’ in her suicide note alongside a bottle of poison. With the death of the maid, the mystery deepens and the quite village is shocked at the recent turn of events.
The Symmington family are popular in the village but like any other families have problems. Megan, Mrs Symmington’s daughter from her first marriage can be one of them at times.
Everyone in the village seems to be a suspect but in such a quiet and close community who would have done such a thing? Who would know the deep dark secrets they kept hidden behind the facades of their perfect country lifes?Maids being murdered, a poison letter of suicide and sex secrets being bandied around in an attempt to create scandal and upset. Intrigue and deception are neighbours here.
