2000s: Take care when driving down the rambling country lanes of the Peak District!
In the small ( and fictional) hamlet of Shawhead in the Peak District there is one road in and one road out. Those how live there are used to being so cut off but delivery drivers and strangers find it hard. When a delivery driver heads down the road, he encounter a series of problems- first his lorry gets stuck in the road when he makes a wrong turn and the sheep block his path and then he gets stuck under a bridge! But that’s not the worst thing that will happen to him on the last night of his life.
If there was another name for this place in the Peak District, then it would be Claustrophobic. There is only one road in and out of the hamlet – a handful of houses where everyone knows everyone else and where strangers are noted for their absence.
This is a rural, bleak and stark landscape where your nearest neighbour is either a sheep or cow. Agriculture here is a way of life and there are no passers by, no tourists and only those who work in farming live here. There are not many houses here, hardly any signs of life, but someone unknown is wandering around and now someone is dead.
Shawhead might be fictional but it could be based on many small hamlets and villages dotted around Derbyshire and the peak district. The landscape is one of animals and livestock, farming machinery dotted around fields, stark, rural landscape and a few farmhouses spaced far apart, as if randomly dropped onto the earth
