What you need to know before your trail

The honour of your company is requested at Lord Beaucastle’s fancy dress ball. But what has happened to the Jewelled Moth! Sophie and Lil must don cunning disguises, mingle in high society and munch many cucumber sandwiches to solve this curious case!

Away from the lovely hallowed halls of Sinclair’s department, the girls must go on a trail that leads straight to London’s most dangerous criminal mastermind, to solve the mystery. They are soon right at the heart of the East End of London, to the areas of Limehouse and Shadwell where the side of London is very different to that they see every day at work. This is where the Baron’s boys live and all sorts of other criminals and bad sorts of the city of London.

Travel Guide

Selfridges/Sinclair’s

In the Clockwork Sparrow, the first book of this series, the setting was a very nice and posh Edwardian department store. Sinclair’s. The department store is based on Selfridges

London East End

This setting in the Jewelled Moth however is a great deal more salubrious as the reader as well as the girls are immersed right in the heart of early twentieth-century slums of the East End. Limehouse and Shadwell were the original China town and Limehouse is where the Lim  family live. The contrast between Sinclair’s and Mei’s parent’s shop, Belgrave Square and Shadwell/Limehouse shows a world of extreme contrasts.

The other side of London is represented by the glamorous world of young debutantes “coming out” for their first season. The world of Buckingham Palace and other posh places showcases a nice, new and exciting world.
