Molly Malloy and her son live in Croydon London during World War 2. Molly’s husband and Jack’s father has already been lost to the war. A bomb causes confusion and Molly wanders the streets traumatised. Jack is sent to an orphanage and later shipped out to Australia to start a new life.
This is the story of the Forgotten Generation, the Stolen Generation of children shipped across the world like animals.Religious orders were expected to look after them, but like Jack, the reality of Bindoon, his new home, is very different to how he expected it to be.
The story touches upon the racism of the time too as Jack’s new family take in an Aboriginal girl Rosie as a housemaid and Jack and Rosie form a forbidden friendship.
