1949, 2013: An island for fallen women
1949 It is the coldest winter Orcades Island has ever known, when a pregnant sixteen-year-old arrives at Fairmile, a home for ‘fallen women’ run by the Catholic Church. She and her baby will disappear before the snow melts.
2013 Frankie Gray has come to the island for the summer, hoping for one last shot at reconnecting with her teenage daughter, Izzy, before starting a job as a deputy sheriff. They are staying with her mother, Diana, at The Fairmile Inn, soon to be a boutique hotel, but when an elderly nun is found dead in suspicious circumstances, and then a tiny skeleton is discovered in the grounds of the house, Frankie is desperate for answers.
Puget Sound
This stretch of water off the coast of Seattle is where Orcades Island is located. This island is ficitonal thank goodness but on it, there’s a place that sadly could be real – a house for fallen women and girls called Fairmile. However, there is nothing fair about it.
In 1949 girls are brought here to give birth. They are fallen girls – those who have become pregant outside of marriage. Instead of bringing shame on the family, they are sent to Fairmile a Catholic home on Orcades island in Puget sound.
The home is run by nuns, who treat the girls with severe cruelty. Once the babies are born, they take them away to new families. That is the one and only option that these girls have.
