2000s: Two sisters , two very different lives
Augusta Hope has never felt like she fits in.
And she’s right – she doesn’t. At six, she’s memorising the dictionary. At seven, she’s correcting her teachers. At eight, she spins the globe and picks her favourite country on the sound of its name: Burundi.
And now that she’s an adult, Augusta has no interest in the goings-on of the small town where she lives with her parents and her beloved twin sister, Julia.
When an unspeakable tragedy upends everything in Augusta’s life, she’s propelled headfirst into the unknown. She’s determined to find where she belongs – but what if her true home, and heart, are half a world away?
Burundi
A small country in Africa that Augusta decides is her favourite country in the entire world. She takes it upon herself to find as much out about this as possible and so heads to the local library for her first book of many.
This is the country where Parfait is from. It’s a country at war, with no chance of education or normal life. There is a shortage of food, water and everything in between. The contrast between life here, and that in Spain and England is stark.
Tarifa, Spain
When Parfait and August both travel to Spain…
Augusta loves it there and that really shows in the writing. They spend time near the port, in the whitewashed town and across the olive fields as they drive to neighbouring villages. Sounds a lovely part of the world and the evocative writing takes you there.
England
The scenes in England are vague but are set in a place called Hedley Green which is fictional. It’s here, she heads to the library and finds a book on Burundi
