1930s up to present day: What do we really leave behind when we die?
In a freezing cold, desolate Edinburgh flat an old woman takes her last breath. She is surrounded by all she owns in the world, the possession of her lifetime but that only amounts to a few odd objects such as an emerald dress, a brazil nut engraved with the ten commandments – and six orange pips sucked dry.
Meanwhile in London Margaret Penny is looking into a case for the Office of Lost People looking for anyone who knew Mrs Walker and to tru and make sense of the strange objects she left.
For these strange objects are about to reveal a remarkable story not just of Mrs Walker but of Margaret too…
A cold, cold flat in an even colder Edinburgh is the last place Mrs Walker lives and where Margaret returns to after running from London. A sad atmosphere created by the weaher and a lonely old woman dying alone at Christmas. the flat is as bleak as the situation:
There is a roster of sorts of women who attend the funerals of the unclaimed dead, a sad state of affairs but one to ensure that even those who die alone are not really alone during their send off.
Margaret who flees from her flat and her mother in London and is where the story alternates from back to the 1930s, WW2 and beyond. This is where the story of Mrs Walker really takes flight and is a world of secrets, lies, betrayals and so much more
