What you need to know before your trail

Norwich Castle starts to reveal a lot about its grisly secrets when  a body is excavated from the grounds. It used to be a prison and the body is suspected to be that of Victorian murderess Jemima Green.

Investigations prove that there are some disturbing historical crimes involving a Victorian child killer which may well hold the key to several more recent deaths

Whilst Ruth Galloway is interested in the deaths of the past, DCI Harry Nelson is busy investigating the case of three infants who have been found dead, in their King’s Lynn home. One after the other. Nelson feels the mother has something to hide

When another child goes missing, could the abduction be linked to the long-dead Mother Hook?

Travel Guide

The Norfolk landscape – its castle and thoughts of what might be buried underneath or near its foundations whether part of this world or part of the next is what creates the spooky and chilling atmosphere of The Outcast Dead.

Norwich Castle and the murderous past of the city

Norwich Castle is a medieval royal fortification in the city and it’s an imposing place to be overlooking everything around it. To think that a Victorian murderess may have done such evil here mixes the mysteries of the past and the grisly crime with modern day investigation techniques. Nearby the streets such as Heigham street and St Peter Mancroft Church’s all have links to the murderous past of the city

Mother Hook – the eerie connotations and the very mention of the name conjures up images you’d rather not see -either for real or in your mind’s eye. Mother Hook is fictional but is said to have been a Victorian child murderer and the hideous idea that a woman especially would have been found guilty of such crimes helps evoke a sense of disturbing secrets and of the fate of poor abandoned children in the 1800s. Mother Hook would take them in and sell them to a resurrectionist after murdering them in the most brutal way first.

There is a television show being filmed in the present day along the lines of ‘Women Who Kill’ and those connected to the show investigate Mother Hook. But with the modern day and the historical mysteries weaving together, Norfolk weaves its witchery, evil spell.
