2000s: The mystery of the Koh-i-Noor diamond
For centuries the Koh-i-Noor diamond has set man against man and king against king.
Now part of the British Crown Jewels, the priceless gem is a prize that many have killed to possess.
So when the Crown Jewels go on display in Mumbai, security is everyone’s principal concern. And yet, on the very day Inspector Chopra visits the exhibition, the diamond is stolen from under his nose.
The heist was daring and seemingly impossible. The hunt is on for the culprits. But it soon becomes clear that only one man – and his elephant – can possibly crack this case…
It’s an important time in the city when this novel opens – The exhibition of the Crown Jewels has arrived in Mumbai two weeks before Her Majesty the Queen is to make her historical visit to the city. This is going to be an historical moment as it’s the first time in twenty years that she’s set foot on Indian soil and it’s been in the papers for weeks now…
This city is still as hot, chaotic, sweaty and unruly as it ever was in the first novel, but Baby Ganesh provides the calm..
The Crown Jewels are to be displayed here. This museum has an interesting story in real life.
It’s now got a new name – not so easy for English speakers – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, but it’s still one of the premier art and history museum in India. The Museum building itself is a fine example of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture and is a listed Grade I Heritage Building
