1990s: The British rule of Hong Kong is coming to a close Are you ready for the Pleasure Express?
Kate always thought she was destined for bigger and better things than a lonely life in the small Scottish town of Coatross. Well, you can’t get much further from that kind of life to that which she is living now – as one of Hong Kong’s most expensive call girls. She is about to find out what the The Pleasure Express is all about.
But these are the final months of British rule in the region and together with Rosie, her fellow courtesan and housemate, her life is going to change and possibly not for the better.
This is the life of the courtesan, call girls what ever you want to call them mixed up with high society at a time of great change and upheaval.
The Pleasure Express says it all and asks how far you would go for money. Katie wonders what her life would be like if she’d stayed in Scotland and as her answer was that she would be married now, to say life as a courtesan was unexpected is very true. But she didn’t belong in fictional Coatross she says and never had.
“How I got from an innocent shag with Mark Innes to taking money for ex, I’d not very sure”
But in Hong Kong, it’s her job, and she’s proud that she’s top of the market. The class and nature of the call girls here is very different -almost a life style to be admired with a work ethic with a very big cash payment at the end. It seems exotic yet dangerous and the glamour is a two sided knife edge.
