On the outbreak of war, Belle Reilly’s husband Jimmy enlists and heads for the deadly trenches of northern France. But Belle knows she cannot stand idly by when so many are sacrificing their lives.
Volunteering to help battlefield wounded, Belle is posted to France as a Red Cross ambulance driver. There, a tragic accident brings her face to face with Etienne – a man from her past she’s never quite forgotten.
Torn between forbidden passion, loyalty and love, Belle is caught in an impossible situation. Will she succumb to the dark forces of this most brutal of wars? Or will fate intervene and finally lead her to lasting happiness?
Belle’s first home – the Seven Dials of London is where the city first started – where the streets where the heart of London could be found. All walks of life in this small space, crowded noisy and full of vice. Belle knows this as home – and is where she discovers the real reality of her world in the city’s underbelly
This is the story of how Bell’s life changes on the frontline. Where Jimmy goes to fight and where several hospitals are set up for the injured and wounded. Belle goes out here to work as a VAD and much of the story details the trials there of the soldiers yes, but also of the grueling work of the VADs. Belle may have started life in a brothel but it’s the setting here that shows her real true grit and determination.
