2000s: Oslo – a city of two sides. On one the Salvation Army, the other, a drug ridden hole.
2000s: Oslo – a city of two sides. On one the Salvation Army, the other, a drug ridden hole.
It is a freezing December night and Christmas shoppers have gathered to listen to a Salvation Army carol concert. Then a shot rings out and one of the singers falls to the floor, dead. Detective Harry Hole and his team are called in to investigate but have little to work with – there is no immediate suspect, no weapon and no motive.
But when the assassin discovers he’s shot the wrong man, Harry finds his troubles have only just begun.
There is a famous citadel in Stavern which was significant during the Great Nordic War in the 1700s. Today the island is a haven to both tourists and artists and is mentioned at the start of the novel as being a place for meetings of the group where Sara attends. When you realise that the real tower is haunted then it takes on an even more eerie tone.
There are the usual sights here such as Sofies gata where HH has an apartment but the other places are of sightings and iconic parks in the city of Oslo which all have meaning to the plot.
The city is brilliantly evoked with drug addicts freezing to death because they even sell the clothing on their backs to feed their next fix.
Oh and you will never see Christmas decorations or hoovers in the same way again….
