2000s: A modern day humourous retelling of Vanity Fair
Becky Sharp has big dreams and no connections. Determined to swap the gutters of Soho for the glamorous, exclusive world behind the velvet rope, Becky will do anything to achieve fame, riches and status.
Whether it’s seducing society’s most eligible bachelors, or befriending silly debutantes and rich old ladies, Becky Sharp is destined for great things. Because it might be tough at the top but it’s worse at the bottom.
From London to Paris and beyond, Becky Sharp is going places – so get the hell out of her way…
Updating Vanity Fair brings Becky Sharp into the instagram and Big Brother age. Becky and Amelia now meet on Big Brother and their fate is sealed. Imagine if Becky as she is in the classic novel was to branch out and end up on Big Brother? When you think of the characters on that show anyway, you can’t help but cheer at the sheer brilliance of this modern move. Becky is of course the Queen of Instagram so the one up one- ship and often tries to post an image of her perfect life to her followers. Channel Five Big Brother is famous for its strange housemates but is it ready for Becky?
The rest of the cast are all there, but in very fitting descriptions and jobs for the modern age : George for example is a Tory MP, and the Pitt Crawleys are a huge acting family.
Locations have changed a bit for the modern media age – Jos Sedley for example is now working in California and owner of a power ball company of all things.

This was a lot of fun! I almost didn’t read it as I’m not normally a fan of updated novels but if ever there was a novel for the modern age, it seems to be Vanity Fair! Oh the instagram age, the Big Brother look at me types, the urge to brand yourself on social media and live the life in London that’s a mix of celebrity and to use that term , fake news.
It was a hoot from start to finish. Scandals, celebrities, people with more money than sense, those out for what they can get including revenge. If the book was a satire when Thackeray wrote it, it certainly is one for now. Social satire travels through time and space it would seem and if anything seems sharper and more fitting to the modern world.
Sarra – you’ve taken a classic and shown me that sometimes a novel is SO far ahead of its time, that it belongs to the here and now as well as then and there. A great beach read – you’ll look up from your lounger and see most of the characters to be fair! I’m shocked that history does indeed seem to repeat itself and that w seem to be living in very similar times to the Regency period. Now where’s my ruffled sleeves..
