Garrett Carr travelled Ireland’s border on foot and by canoe. This invisible line has hosted smugglers and kings, runaways, peacemakers, protestors and terrorists, revealing the tumult of a border, changing the way we look at nationhood, land and power.
From encounters with border dwellers to uncovering rituals, hidden pathways and ancient monuments, this book presents the borderland as a unique realm of its own, and asks what it holds for the future.
The border landscape in Ireland is something very unique indeed. This is a look the legacy of that border area and at a time where Brexit could be changing what and even where that border is, it’s a good time to have a look at this unique area.
This is a tour of that border by using it as a trail around Ireland’s history via its forts, castles, old custom huts, farms and everything else including the now defunct interpretive centre.

The Slieve Bloom Mountains are a mountain range which rise from the central plain of the country to a height of 527 metres. They’re not the tallest of mountains granted but by local standards, they are.
Burt Castle a stronghold dating from the 1500s. It’s a ruined castle and is also often spelt Birt Castle
Moyry Castle was built in 1601 by Lord Mountjoy to help secure Moyry Pass and the Gap of the North. It’s a small rectangular tower three storeys high.
