DS Prinsesse Ragnhild in Norway
On 23 October 1940, the ship was heading north and left Bodø at 10:30 on its way to Stamsund with around 450 people on board. In addition to the crew of 50, the ship had 75 Norwegian passengers and an estimated 330 German soldiers on board.
At around 11.20 a.m. at the island of Landegode , she was hit by an explosion and within 8–10 minutes the ship sank. MK “Batnfjord” was nearby, and rescued 142 people, of whom 79 were Norwegians. The fishing boat “Gangerolf” also arrived and picked up 14 survivors. The cause of the sinking has never been determined.
