Travel Guide

The Singer Factory Glasgow

1911 marked an important year for Glasgow industry. There were many changes in the labour force and ways of working which created tensions and problems with the workers. Technological advances were also causing changes.

Several workers stopped work in protest over the reorganisation of their work process. Within two days the vast majority of the 11,000 employees at the plant came out on strike in sympathy with their colleagues.

The Singer strike was a  success because of worker solidarity.

The  Singer Company is an American manufacturer of sewing machines, first established in 1851. The first factory in the UK was built in 1867.
