2000s: ‘Your mother has been arrested. She stole you.’
13 year old Diya has always known life with just her mother Vani. They’ve always been together and her mother is the only constant in her life as they’v moved from one place to another.
But one day her mother, the one person she loves and trusts more than anyone in the world is arrested and accused of having abducted Diya when she was a baby.
Vani knew this day would come. She knew she must one day fght for her child and to open the door to her childhood and the one woman who was once as close to her as a sister.
Diya lives in England with her mother Vani who works in the local Indian restaurant. Her mother’s job is a lovely reminder of her Indian culture and as she wafts home every night, she carries the fragrances of the spices and flavours of her culture. From this, to be thrown into the bowels of the English Social services systems is especially hard and very confusing. A young girl, left alone and afraid, finds herself in a cold and unforgiving place.
The story moves between here and the contrasting world of India.
Diya’s boice as she searches for the truth is poignant and raw. Vani thinks back via letters as she remembers her life in India, her past in India. Aarti is the third woman in this story and between the three of them, the story of children and girls in India comes to the fore. How your background is critical in hierarchical India! We are immersed in the time before Diya’s birth and daily life in India for both of these women, how this changes when Diya comes into the world. How far does a mother go for the love of her child? No matter what your culture or background, a mother’s love is unbeatable.
