1912, British Guiana, South America: Winnie Cox is about to marry George Quint, the love of her life. Born into a life of luxury and privilege on her father’s sugar plantation, Winnie has turned against her family by choosing to be with George – a poor black postman from the slums.
Winnie may be living in poverty, but she’s got what sister Johanna doesn’t have: a loving husband and a beautiful family. And despite Johanna running her family’s sugar plantation, Winnie will always be their mother’s favourite daughter, a bitter pill for Johanna to swallow.
Then Winnie’s son falls ill and she must travel to Venezuela desperate for a cure. With her sister away, Johanna finds herself increasingly drawn to George. But he only has eyes for Winnie. Johanna, stung by the rejection and the fragile state of her own marriage, is out for revenge – no matter how devastating the consequences.

Albouystown, the poorest part of Georgetown, Albouystown is in the north, bounded on the Sussex Street trench on the north and the Punt Trench Dam on the South. the Repentir Cemetery adjoins it, which only adds to its reputation, – people are scared of ghosts and jumbies and bad spirits”
The family live in Butcher street as it was which is described as being one of the richer streets with separate cottages in big yards full of fruit trees.. Most of the streets were full of long buildings – tenenments called ranges where the people lived with even less money than they did. George feels shame when he brings Winnie back here. Moreover, she is to be the only white woman living in the whole of Albouystown which is set to cause a shock.
This is a world where racism and slavery were very much part of the landscape and so when two worlds collide, two worlds so different in wealth, status and colour, the challenges are numerous. Winnie is the daughter of a rich plantation owner and her life before is so different to life now.
The Promised Land
Winnie’s World. This is the one dictated by the rhythm of sugar. “Any child growing up here knows each season b the sights,sounds and smells of the sugar cycle”
Sugar is our gold – Demerara gold, Corentyne Gold, named after the regions where it’s grown. Each county in British Guiana produces its own version. This world is sweet and romantic, but a world away from reality.

I loved The Secret Life of Winnie Cox and this just builds on the brilliance of that. The writing transports via the sight, sound and smell of the sugar plantation, the various varieties and I could taste it on my lips as I read.
I was so involved with the interracial relationship of the first novel I was eager to see how this would continue. Poor George! What must it have been like to have been in his world. Not that Winnie had it any easier in her way. Their world together was one of love – but that in itself causes jealously and spite.
The writing is stunningly evocative and sensual with its aromas, plantation plants blowing in the wind, the excitement of the ship arriving at port.
Winnie is a woman in a million and George, well I just loved him. Their story was one of love, heartbreak and pain and I was with them every step of the way. I just felt immersed in the story and setting from the start and the world coloured around me in pastel colours, then full vibrant shades as the colour developed. It was like one of those colouring books that are all the rage now, the setting just really shone as did the characters as their story unfolded. And as for the sister! Well, what a nasty piece of work. I don’t want to say more without fear of spoiling your reading of the book. But a lovely read and continuation of George and Winnie’s story.
