Rachel has been in love with Alistair since she was seventeen. Even though she hasn’t seen him for sixteen years and she’s now married to someone else. Even though she was a teenager when they met. Even though he is twenty years older than her. She’s found it impossible to forget their summer together on a remote, sun-trapped Greek island. Until now.
When Rachel unexpectedly reconnects with a girl that she knew back then, she is forced to re-examine her memories of that golden summer and confront the truth about her relationship with Alistair and about her time working for an enigmatic and wealthy man on the island. And when Alistair returns, the pull of the past could prove impossible to resist…
The island in the novel where the girls go to live and work, is fictional and just as well as you would not want to go there if you were female. If you had daughters or sisters, you would warn them from going here. Think of the island created by a certain Mr Epstein and you will be close to what this island represents.
The setting is vague but it is very evocative of a Greek island paradise. Paradise for some but not for everyone of course. If something seems too good to be true, it is right? Imagine being a young girl and thinking the world is your oyster. The allure of an older man fancying you and paying you attention. The invitation to a glamourous island with celebrities.
You are away from home, you are making new friends and the island you read about here is stunning. The views, the rocky caves, the hills, the views. Sea and sun, glorious weather and time to relax in the huge and sprawling complex. However……there are dark, dark shadows overhead.
